A FIVE-YEAR-OLD boy is in a serious condition after a horror road smash yesterday.

The youngster was travelling with his three -year-old sister in a Renault van when the driver of the van collided with a Scania lorry on the B921 Glenrothes to Kinglassie road at around 1pm.

The 48 year-old driver of the van was trapped in the wreckage of his vehicle for over an hour as fire crews battled to free him.

The young girl was relatively uninjured but her brother sustained serious head and leg injuries.

He was rushed by ambulance, accompanied by a police escort, to Queen Margaret Hospital, in Dunfermline.

His condition is currently giving medical staff cause for concern and he may well be transferred to Edinburgh’s Sick Kids Hospital for further treatment.

The busy road was closed for several hours to allow for a police investigation to take place.

Inspector David Houston, Deputy Head of Road Policing, said: “I would appeal for any person using this road at the time of the crash, who may have witnessed the accident, to contact us on our appeals line to ensure we gather as clear a picture of the circumstances leading to this crash as possible.”
