Mum and son in hospital after head-on smash

By Michael MacLeod

A MOTHER and son spent their third night in hospital last night after a horror car crash.

The 36 year-old woman was driving her six year-old son towards Edinburgh on the A71 near Heriot Watt University when their Renault Megane crashed head-on into a Kia Sportage.

The mum was last night critically ill with serious neck and internal injuries, while her son’s condition was described as serious but stable.

Police said the driver initially veered into oncoming traffic and clipped a passing Vauxhaul Astra.

She continued on the wrong side of the road before smashing head-on into the Kia.
Medics initially treated the young boy at the crash scene on Saturday around 7.30pm.

But he was rushed to the Sick Kids Hospital in Edinburgh, while his mother and the Kia driver were taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

The road was closed for four hours while police investigated the wreckage.

They appealed to witnesses who saw the vehicles before or after the crash to contact them immediately.
