Two men rescued in Highlands following avalanche

TWO men were air lifted to hospital after getting caught in an avalanche in the remote West Highlands on Boxing Day.

The pair were climbing Sail Mhor, a mountain over 2,000 feet high situated on the southern edge of Little Loch Broom close to Ullapool when the avalanche struck.

One of the men managed to call the emergency services and staff at RAF Kinloss responded by sending the helicopter from the HMS Coastguard at Stornoway, on the isle of Lewis to rescue the men.

The coastguard search and rescue team managed to locate the men and airlift them both to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.

One of the men is said to have shoulder injuries and a suspected head injury while the other climber is believed to be unhurt.
