Chef serves up fried Irn Bru batter butter balls treat

By Lewis Notarangelo

Scotland may already be notorious for “unhealthy” food options (I refer of course, to the infamous Deep Fried Mar Bar) but one Edinburgh chef has taken Scottish dessert to a whole new level.

Simon Robertson – head chef at Edinburgh hotel and pub The Fiddler’s Elbow – has created “Braveheart Butter Balls” – frozen balls of butter deep-fried in an Irn-Bru batter.

Despite being dubbed “a heart attack on a plate”, the quirky patriot believes that the treat isn’t quite as calorific as people might expect, as the balls are actually hollow.

Along with the deep-fried treat, the balls are also served with Irn-Bru ice cream, giving the traditionally American dish of butter balls a decidedly Scottish twist.
