Armed robbery at city bookies

Police say the man may have been carrying a weapon under his jacket

AN ARMED robber burst into a bookies and threatened staff on New Year’s Day.

The man walked into the Coral bookmakers in the Leith area of Edinburgh just before 4pm on Sunday.

He demanded the male member of staff on duty put cash into a black carrier bag.

Police believe the man may have been holding a weapon partly hidden under his jacket.

A police spokesman said: “This was a frightening experience for the member of staff who was not hurt but was very shaken.

“It is believed the man made off in the direction of Kirkgate and I would urge anyone who was in the area at the time to get in touch with us.

“The area was cordoned off for a short time while searches were carried out. We are appealing for any witnesses or anyone who has information about this incident to come forward.”

Police say the robber is in his 30s, around 6ft tall and of medium build.

He had dark hair, stubble and was wearing large silver rimmed sunglasses and a blue hooded anorak with grey or brown patches on each shoulder.

He spoke with a local accent and was carrying a black cloth re-usable shopping bag with black handles on each side and a white printed design also on each side.

Anyone with any information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 01313113131 or the charity Crimestoppers on 0800555111.
