Emily’s design makes it to the Big Apple

A DESIGN created by Edinburgh College of Art student, Emily Martin, will be emblazoned on 10,000 t-shirts at the 9th Annual Scotland Run, New York City 7 April.

A 10,000 strong sea of Manhattan runners will receive the t-shirt as part of the 10k race across the Big Apple’s Central Park.

The event sold out in record breaking time as the Scotland Run has become one of the most highly anticipated races in the New York road runner diary.

The t-shirt design competition, launched in partnership with the Edinburgh College of Art, kicked off in January with 28 students submitting ideas for the sporting top.  The winning piece blends Edinburgh Castle with the New York City skyline, featuring runners’ silhouettes against the backdrop of the two cities.  A Tartan pattern is woven throughout the blue design.

Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop said:

“Scotland is a creative nation, known all over the world as a hotbed of artistic talent. The Scotland Run T-shirt is a great way to showcase our up-and-coming designers on the international stage and I look forward to seeing this year’s eye-catching winning entry being worn by ten thousand runners in New York.”

Emily Martin said:  “The inspiration for the design was to mesh two iconic skylines:  New York City and Edinburgh.  It’s really exciting to think that my artwork will be worn and seen by so many people across the Big Apple as part of Scotland Week.”
