Hamster injured after Alloa abandonment

THE Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after a tiny injured hamster was found abandoned in Alloa.

Scotland’s animal welfare charity was called to rescue the female grey Russian dwarf hamster after a passer by spotted a plastic cage lying on its side in bushes near Smithfield Loan on Monday evening (26 March).

Closer inspection of the cage found the hamster trapped inside. A bag containing a pink hamster ball and food had also been left.

Sofia was found with a ball and some food

Inspector Nicola Liddell collected the frightened pet and took her to a local vet for examination and treatment, where she is currently being cared for. She has been named Sofia.

Inspector Liddell said, “It would appear that this poor little hamster has been chucked out on to the streets with no thought whatsoever for her welfare.

“An initial vet examination has revealed that Sofia has a possible pelvis or leg injury and she was dehydrated and in thin bodily condition when she was found.

“Her cage had been tipped on its side therefore it’s possible that her injuries may have occurred after she was dumped.

“Someone has gone to the expense of buying a substantial three-tiered hamster house and accessories so she has obviously been a pet up until very recently.

“It is very sad but not uncommon for small pets such as guinea pigs and hamsters to be dumped outdoors when their owners have had enough of caring for them.

“However, people should be aware that abandoning an animal is an offence and anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.”

Anyone with information relating to the suspected abandonment is being urged to contact the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.
