Scots DJ is first Brit to hit 1bn Spotify downloads

SCOTS DJ Calvin Harris becomes first British artist to pass one billion streams on music download site Spotify.

The famed producer’s big hit Summer totalled over 160 million streams worldwide alone.

Music Week have estimated that this astonishing number of plays on Spotify has made Harris £4.3m.

Mark Terry, Co-president of Columbia Records UK, called it a “landmark achievement for Calvin” classing him in the “elite tier of global artists.”

Harris gained 177 retweets today when he thanked his fans for this monumental achievement.

He tweeted to his 4.73m followers: “Thank u world”.

The Scottish DJ shot to fame with number one hits such as ‘Im Not Alone’ and ‘We Found Love’ with Rihanna.

These and other tracks have been played by UK listeners 1bn times on the Swedish music platform, yielding a per-stream royalty rate of $0.007.

Some of the revenue is shared with his record label, Columbia.

It was confirmed earlier in 2014 that he is the highest earning DJ in the world for a second successive year with earnings of £39.8m in the past 12 months.
