Berwick Rangers captain Lee Currie has completed a shock switch to Juniors outfit Newtongrange Star – just 12 months after being on trial with Hearts.

The 25-year-old has emerged as the Wee Rangers’ talisman since joining the club in 2011, scoring 40 goals from midfield in 149 appearances.

However, Edinburgh-based Currie has chosen to move closer to home ahead of the upcoming campaign, turning his back on SPFL football to join the Midlothian club.

The move is made all the more remarkable after Currie – who came through the youth ranks at Hibernian – spent several weeks training with the Jambos last summer, featuring in friendlies against Ludogorets Razgrad and Dinamo Bucharest.

However, the Tynecastle side chose not to pursue a move for the player, and he will be now be plying his trade in the SJFA East Superleague next term.
