Scotland midfielder Charlie Adam has been described as a huge Stoke City fans’ favourite after signing a new deal with the club.

The 29-year-old has penned a one-year extension that ties him to the Potters until summer 2017, while there is the potential to prolong the contract through to 2018.

Former Rangers and Liverpool playmaker Adam finished the season in a rich vein of form after scoring five goals – including a spectacular 66-yard strike against Chelsea – in eight Premier League games.

Adam also earned an international recall from Gordon Strachan and collected his 26th cap in the recent friendly victory over Qatar at Easter Road.

Stoke chief executive Tony Scholes said: “We are delighted that Charlie has decided to extend his stay with us.

“It’s clear to see he’s enjoying playing under the management of Mark Hughes and feels at home at the Britannia Stadium.

“Charlie is a big fans’ favourite and I’m sure they will be pleased, as we are, that he is staying for at least another two years, if not longer.”

Adam tweeted: “Delighted to have signed a new contract with Stoke City.”
