Former First Minister Jack McConnell to get honorary degree

FORMER First Minister of Scotland Jack McConnell will receive an honorary degree at the University of Edinburgh tomorrow (Friday, 3 July).

The Latin title of the degree translates as “In the Cause of Honour”.

 

 

 

The politician, whose title is Rt Hon Lord Lord McConnell of Glenscorrodale, will receive the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa at a ceremony in the Usher Hall.

Raised on the Isle of Arran, Jack McConnell worked as a mathematics teacher before becoming a politician. During his time at Holyrood, he managed Scottish Labour’s 1997 referendum campaign.

He served in the Scottish Government for eight years, including as Finance Minister and Education Minister, before becoming First Minister from 2001 and remaining in post until 2007.

He is currently Vice President of UNICEF UK.
