FORMER Hibernian and Rangers star Dean Shiels has joined Canadian outfit FC Edmonton.

The 32-year-old was a free agent after spending the tail end of 2016 with Dundalk in the League of Ireland, also featuring in the Europa League against AZ Alkmaar and Zenit St Petersburg.

Edmonton ply their trade in the North American Soccer League, which begins in April, and are managed by former Gers and Hamilton ace Colin Miller.

Miller told fcedmonton.com: “Dean’s a goalscorer and a creative player. I’m delighted that Dean has joined our club. Dean did very well for my old club Rangers and has had a fantastic career.

“I’ve done a lot of research on Dean and spoke to a lot of people in Scotland about him. He’s a leader and a quality player.”

Shiels, who boasts 14 caps for Northern Ireland, scored 31 goals in four seasons with Rangers as he helped them ascend from the Third Division.

He also enjoyed successful stints at Hibs and Kilmarnock either side of three years with Doncaster Rovers.
