Heart-stopping “yacht cam” shows £1m boat almost hit spectator vessel at start of race

DRAMATIC “yacht cam” footage shows the moment a boat worth £1m came within a few feet of hitting a vessel carrying spectators.

Yachts starting the Volvo Ocean race off the coast of Spain had to navigate waters congested with spectator boats and one yacht came alarmingly close.

A jaw-dropping clip shows Turn the Tide on Plastic’s race almost end before it began off the coast of Alicante.

Amazing aerial and on-board footages shows the huge yacht, skippered by Britain’s Dee Caffari, barely avoid a collision as fans can be seen filming the incident on their phones.

During the short clip a commentator can be heard gasping and saying “close!” as the yacht skirts past the other boat.

Whilst heart-stopping on-board footage shows the crew shouting “get away” and waving their arms at the spectators vessel.

At the end of the video, the captain can is seen letting out a puff of air and looking relieved.

Held every three years, the Volvo Ocean race is described as the longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world.

The 2017/2018 event sees seven different teams of men and women race around the world visiting six continents with this years event being the longest in history and will take teams around nine months to complete.
