Reckless motorist pulls off seven dangerous undertakes on M1 in 10 minutes

SHOCKING footage shows a reckless driver perform seven highly dangerous motorway undertakes in minutes – while ignoring virtually empty outside lanes.

The motorist comes within feet of causing a serious accidents on several occasions while on the M1 near Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

The silver Vauxhall Astra is seen squeezing between cars and lorries even though two overtaking lanes appear to be free of traffic.

Courier driver Steve Bullock said there was a female passenger in the car and the driver may have been deliberately trying to “scare or impress” her.

Mr Bullock, 59, also revealed that he offered the footage to Derbyshire Police but claims he was told no action would be taken without independent witnesses.

The seven undertakes happened on January 29, over the course of about 10 minutes, between junctions 28 and 31.

In the first instance, the Astra rapidly undertakes Mr Bullock’s car before committing a second very dangerous undertake by squeezing between a vehicle and an HGV.

The third case shows the Astra behind a truck in lane two. Instead of moving into lane three, which is free, the Astra moves into lane one and undertakes.

Not long after, the fourth dangerous undertake happens when the Astra comes speeding up on the inside of Mr Bullock’s van then the Astra hurries into lane two almost clipping the front of the van.

The fifth reckless move sees the Astra complete the same outrageous stunt he pulled off minutes before.

Sitting behind a truck in lane two, the Astra moves into lane one squeezing in front of a truck before speeding off in the inside lane, while lane three sits empty.

In the sixth instance of this reckless driving, the driver veers into lane one, in front of a caravan, to undertake a truck in lane two instead of overtaking in an empty lane three.

In the final act of danger, a mere ten minutes after his first, the driver comes speeding past the inside Mr Bullock’s van, who is occupying lane three, despite lane four being open for an overtake.

Steve Bullock said: “I was empty heading north on M1 between junction 28 and 31, towards the Chesterfield exit.

“The driver when I passed him was aged between 20-30 slim dark haired with a stubbly beard, and was spending most of the time looking and laughing at his female passenger, not sure whether he was trying to scare or impress her.”

Mr Bullock said he put the clips together and sent them to police in Derbyshire but was told magistrates in Derby would not accept the footage without independent witnesses.

RAC spokesman Simon Williams said: “This is a frightening example of why undertaking on our motorways is illegal. It presents a completely unacceptable danger to every other motorway user. But what makes this repeated undertaking all the more shocking is the way the driver cuts in sharply through very small gaps in the traffic when there is plenty of space to overtake sensibly in the correct way.”
