Dramatic moment cyclist hurled on to roof of car before crashing head-first on to road

DRAMATIC video shows a Deliveroo cyclist thrown on to the roof of a car after the driver turned right without spotting the approaching bike.

Daniel Smith, who suffered a cracked coccyx and minor head injuries in the accident, then falls head-first on to the road.

The incident happened in Edinburgh on Saturday evening and was caught on the dashcam of a car stopped at lights.

Daniel circled in red moments before the collision

Daniel, a physics student, was wearing a white- and teal-coloured jacket, yellow trainers, and black shorts, as well as a green Deliveroo takeaway bag.

But it was raining at the time and the driver of a Nissan Note turning right failed to spot the danger.

Daniel hits the front of the car at high speed and is hurled on to the roof, ending up on his back. He then slides, legs in the air, to the road.

As the cyclist picks himself up and goes over to the side of the road, the driver and her passenger get out of the car to check if Daniel is ok.

Daniel is seen in the footage, obtained by Scotland’s Worst Drivers, bending over in pain as the driver speaks to him.

An onlooker then comes over to help Daniel to take the bike off the road as the driver and her passenger return to their car.

It is believed that the cyclist went to hospital on Sunday where he was diagnosed with a cracked coccyx bone and a minor head injury.

Daniel said he had suffered a few close calls while cycling but this incident had given him quite a “shock”

He said: “I was actually on my way to pick up another delivery after just finishing my last delivery down the road.

“Sitting down hurts a lot and there is nothing they can do about it when I’m doing my resit exams, so I’m in the process of looking at special circumstances for my exams as I’m so shaken by the accident and my head is everywhere.”

In a Facebook post, Daniel urged drivers always to be on the lookout for cyclists.

He said: “A reminder for me how vulnerable cyclists are cycling in a city. And if there is anything anyone can take from this is, just please look for cyclists when you are driving.

“Luckily I’m ok and heading to hospital now, but it could have been much worse for me!

“Obviously I’m not going to be able to work for a while now so for me the impact is much greater than just a bump and a scare.”

People shared their sympathy for Daniel on social media.
