Hibs star Daryl Horgan among 15 players cut by Republic of Ireland as Mick McCarthy names final squad for Euro 2020 double-header

HIBS playmaker Daryl Horgan has been cut from the final Republic of Ireland squad to face Gibraltar and Georgia this month.

The 26-year-old has shone under new Easter Road boss Paul Heckingbottom and was rewarded with a call up to Mick McCarthy’s preliminary 38-man group for the Euro 2020 qualifying double-header.

Horgan, who has notched five goals in 31 outings for the capital club this term, was among 15 players axed as the substantial initial roster was trimmed down to a final selection of 23.

Speaking earlier this month about the possibility of adding to his six caps, Horgan said: “I came up to Scotland to play and I’m doing that now.

“Mick McCarthy called me when he got the job. He just said to keep playing and he’d be keeping an eye on me. It’s down to myself now – but it will be difficult as quite a few of the lads are playing well.”

Former SPFL stars Aidan McGeady, Jimmy Dunne and James McCarthy were also among the casualties.
