QUENTIN Tarantino’s favourite cinema has been banned from Scotland’s biggest movie festival because its 3D screen isn’t up to scratch.

The Cameo in Edinburgh – Scotland’s oldest cinema – has a screen specially designed for showing 3D movies in its main auditorium.

But the organisers of the Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) claim the screen spoils the quality of the 2D movies they show.

Famous films screened at the festival over the years include, The Full Monty, Run Lola Run, Amelie, Pulp Fiction, Trainspotting and Billy Elliot.

As a result, the Cameo has been kicked out of the festival, breaking a link that stretches back 64 years.

The Cameo’s patrons include Hollywood A-listers Sir Sean Connory and Tilda Swindon.

Django Unchained director Tarantino previously described the historic cinema as his favourite in the world after Pulp Fiction had its UK premier there in the 90s.

But the EIFF, which regularly attracts big-name stars to Scotland’s capital, says the Cameo’s 3D screen is “not compliant” with set film standards.

In France – the ultimate cinéaste nation – 3D silver screens have already been banned completely by regulatory body CNC amid claims they create light “hot spots” when used to show 2D films.

A spokeswoman for the EIFF said: “EIFF is committed to presenting films to the highest possible standard.

“The screening of 2D films on silver screens is not compliant with the standards set down by standards bodies, DCI and SMPTE. EIFF has a very long history of working with the Cameo.

“Unfortunately, the Cameo is currently using a silver screen, which sadly means we are unable to use that venue for the 2013 EIFF.

“We hope to be working with the Cameo again in the future. EIFF is very pleased to be working again with Cineworld Edinburgh in 2013 who at this time use matt white screens.”

Last year the festival hosted the European premier of Disney Pixar’s Scotland-set animation Brave, which was attended by Robbie Coltrane and Kelly MacDonald.

In 2012, the festival also attracted Robert Carlyle, Ewan Bremner, Kevin McKidd and Brian Cox.

The EIFF first started in 1947 and will celebrate its 66th year in 2013. During its time as a host venue, Orson Welles, Cary Grant and Quentin Tarantino have visited the Cameo.

Famous films screened at the festival over the years include, The Full Monty, Run Lola Run, Amelie, Pulp Fiction, Trainspotting and Billy Elliot.

The Cameo, which started screening festival films in 1949, opened its doors in 1914.

Insiders at the Cameo Cinema said issues over the cinema’s 3D screen were raised privately by the Film Festival bosses before it purchased the screen earlier this year.

No-one was available for comment from Picture Houses, the owners of the Cameo.

A SCOTTISH hospital had to send an injured youngster to another medical unit because they lacked staff and equipment to stitch a cut.

A boy with a cut leg was taken to the minor injuries unit at Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline but no-one could be found to put in stitches.

So the youngster had to be transferred 12 miles to Kirkcaldy’s Victoria Hospital for the routine procedure.

The Victoria Hospital has faced numerous complaints from patients since it opened its new wing last year.

The “incredible” blunder was revealed by a councillor during a question-and-answer session at the Queen Margaret Hospital.

Helen Law said: “A young lad turning up with a gash in his leg and there’s nobody to put in stitches so he’s sent to Kirkcaldy. It’s not good enough.

“It’s about getting it right first time. Not having the most basic supplies, things you would have in your house. People find it incredible that somebody can’t put a stitch in an injury.”

She added: “The biggest issue is the lack of clarity and it also seems that what they do at minor units depends on who is working that day.

“That is what people are being told. You would think a gash on the leg was a minor injury.

“Things are not working and you’ve got to get it right.”

Another councillor, Mike Rumney, told the same meeting: “I did a bit of digging and found out they don’t even have the most basic supplies, things you would have in your house.

“People find it incredible that somebody can’t put a stitch in an injury.”

NHS Fife has come under regular fire over the past year.

The Victoria Hospital has faced numerous complaints from patients since it opened its new wing last year.

In March last year, it was revealed more than 100 complaints had been received in the few months it had been open.

Earlier this yea it was claimed by a whistleblower hospital chiefs redeployed midwives, operating theatre staff and elderly carers into frontline nursing roles to cover-up fears of staff shortages.

A 25-year-old Scots mum was forced to give birth on the frozen pavement outside the hospital in February last year after nurses failed to answer the door buzzer for several minutes.

A GERMAN tour operator has accused a Scots ferry operator of adopting a ‘Nazi symbol’ as its new logo.

Serco NorthLink launched a marketing campaign in February – centred on fictional character Magnus the Viking who they say symbolises “dynamism, power and pride”.

But Hamburg-based Britain Travel have urged the ferry company to re-think its logo, comparing it with imagery used when Hitler was in power.

But Hamburg-based Britain Travel have urged the ferry company to re-think its logo, comparing it with imagery used when Hitler was in power.

And it has emerged that Scottish academics warned the company about the logo earlier this year.

Viking imagery was used by the Nazis as a symbol of Aryan heritage and cultural pride.

The new NorthLink logo shows proud-looking Magnus the Viking with his arm pointing purposefully in the air.

Peter Storm, who runs Hamburg-based tour operators Britain Travel, said: “We saw the logo for the first time and we immediately thought of the imagery used at the time Hitler was in power in Germany.

“It is not even the arm pointing in the air but the whole figure is associated with Viking propaganda symbols from that period.”

He urged NorthLink to reconsider the use of the Viking and suggested it be amended to look friendlier and less warlike.

He said: “They need to move away from the Nazi symbolism. NorthLink is not on a crusade or looting expedition and this Viking symbol could upset Germans.”

The Waffen SS, who carried out some of the worst atrocities of the Second World War, were particularly fond of Viking imagery.

Norse and Viking writing, known as runes, appeared extensively on SS propaganda posters and equipment.

Dr Victoria Whitworth, lecturer in Nordic Studies based in Orkney, said concerns had been privately raised to Serco NorthLink months ago.

She said the image had associations with Aryan propaganda used by the Nazis.

She said: “There is an Aryan element associated with the Vikings. We didn’t feel Serco NorthLink had perhaps projected the image they were intending.

“The artistic style they have chosen is very much of that early 20th-century aesthetic. They could perhaps have consulted more widely.”

The University of the Highlands and Islands academic said the imagery could cause a problem for German tourists and have negative overtones in other parts of Europe.

She said: “This could also be a problem for Scandinavian visitors, given their complex relationship with that ideology.

“They are very much a target audience for tourism in Orkney.”

The chairman of the Orkney Tourism Group, Gareth Crichton, urged Serco NorthLink to reconsider the move.

He said: “It just has connotations, certainly for some of our tour operators in middle Europe and also in Scandinavia, so the brand in itself has the potential to be a wee bit controversial.”

A spokeswoman at NorthLink said: “Launched in January, the Magnus icon forms part of our wider campaign to attract more visitors to the Northern Isles based on their unique history, landscape and visitor experience.

“The logo has received excellent feedback from passengers and the tourism industry.”

Serco NorthLink was hit by controversy earlier this week when it announced one of its fleet of five ferries, the MV Hamnavoe, will be out of action for more than a month, just as the tourist season in Orkney begins.

Last year the company was awarded the £243 million Transport Scotland contract to provide lifeline services to Orkney and Shetland over the next six years.

AN investigation has been demanded into claims hospital chiefs tried to trick government inspectors by moving staff to frontline nursing roles.

Midwives, operating theatre staff and elderly carers were redeployed to an overstretched admissions ward at Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy, Fife, the same day as the inspection, according to whistleblowers.

It is claimed the redeployment created a false impression of smooth-running at the hospital, which has been the subject of numerous allegations about inadequate standards of patient care.

NHS Fife were accused of trying to “trick” hospital inspectors

Critics have condemned the shuffling of staff as a “wholly inappropriate deception” and the Scottish Tories last night called for a full investigation.

NHS Fife admitted staff were moved on the day of the inspection, February 18, describing it as “routine practice”.

But the Scottish Government said it was seeking assurances from NHS Fife about what happened, adding that any behaviour of this kind “would be completely unacceptable”.

A staff nurse at the Victoria, who asked not to be named, said the staff who were moved to frontline duties on February 18 were qualified to do the job.

She said: “And whilst [they] were here the admissions ward ran like clockwork.

“But that’s what it should be like at all times – not just when the Government come in.”

David Forbes, Unison Scotland regional organiser for Fife Health branch, said the hospital’s actions were “wholly inappropriate”.

He said: “We understand…that nursing staff from other areas were expected to move in order to give the impression of full staffing complement to visiting Scottish Government officials.

“It is not clear whether this could have directly caused any problem for patient care.

“However it is wholly inappropriate that such a deception should have been organised in order to make things look better than they are for a visit by Scottish Government officials.

“Unison is working with NHS Fife to improve the real situation at Victoria Hospital and to recruit more staff.

“But the fundamental problem remains the fact that there are simply not enough beds to meet need – and this is a direct result of the hospital extension having been funded through a costly and inefficient Private Finance Initiative.”

“Hoodwink”

Scottish Conservative health spokesman Jackson Carlaw said a proper investigation should be carried out by the Government following the allegations.

“We know that health boards are facing tremendous staffing pressures, with almost 2,000 less nurses and midwives under the SNP.

“But with hundreds of posts lying empty for more than three months, there is no sign of relief anytime soon for hardworking NHS staff.

“After the waiting times scandal, any suggestion that health boards are trying to hoodwink inspectors over staffing levels must be fully investigated.

“It would be simply unacceptable if vital staff are being moved from other departments to shore up shortages in other areas.

“The Health Secretary has demanded total transparency within the NHS and he has to ensure this happens.”

Margaret Watt, of Scottish Patients Association, said: “If this is indeed true then I am completely appalled.

“It is very bad. If they had left it the way it was then the Government could have seen the real picture.

“They are out of step with the rest us who are championing for extra nursing staff.

“The next thing they will bring in porters or administration staff and dress them up as nurses.

“It is a ridiculous decision for them to make, I think it’s as bad as massaging figures and whoever did this should go.”

The Victoria has faced numerous complaints from patients since it opened its new wing last year.

In March last year, it was revealed more than 100 complaints had been received in the few months it had been open.

Last month a distraught husband claimed staff had failed to diagnose his 51-year-old wife’s ruptured bowel. Cecilia Fisher, from Cowdenbeath, was sent home but had to be readmitted four days later and died following emergency surgery.

A 25-year-old Scots mum was forced to give birth on the frozen pavement outside the hospital in February last year after nurses failed to answer the door buzzer for several minutes.

And in another incident, an elderly one-legged heart surgery patient was also abandoned in a toilet by staff at the same hospital wing for several hours.

“Completely unacceptable”

A Scottish Government spokeswoman said if the allegations about deceiving inspectors were true it would be “completely unacceptable.”

She said: “It is the responsibility of NHS boards to ensure that they have appropriate staffing levels in order to ensure the safety and quality of care for patients is maintained.

“We have sought assurances from NHS Fife around this issue and we are clear that any behaviour of this kind would be completely unacceptable.”

George Cunningham, director of acute services, said: “NHS Fife absolutely refutes the allegation that staff were asked to lie during a visit from Scottish Government colleagues to Victoria Hospital.

“We have previously acknowledged that winter capacity demands have placed significant pressure on the system.

“It is routine practice for suitably trained and qualified staff from areas where demand, at that time, is identified as being low to be redeployed for a short time to assist colleagues in areas experiencing significant pressure to ensure that appropriate staffing levels are maintained.

“Where we move staff from one area to another this is done in an open and transparent way.

“It is good practice to prioritise our deployment of nursing staff to areas of greatest need for patient care.

“Our staff are our most important and valued asset and we recognise that they have faced pressures.

“Any concerns raised are being worked through in partnership with our employee director, who represents staff on the board of NHS Fife and is chairman of the staff side of the area partnership forum.

“We would encourage staff members to approach us directly with any concerns.”

Anne Buchanan, board nurse director, said: “The improvement work that we are currently undertaking is designed to address and improve both the patient and the staff experience, with the feedback and involvement of staff vital in delivering this improvement.

“As part of the actions already taken, five additional registered nurses have been recruited for Admissions Unit 1.”

FORMER Labour spin doctor Alastair Campbell was left red-faced after accidentally tweeting a picture of himself wearing posh hunting clothes.

Campbell – who helped Tony Blair’s Government push through a ban on fox hunting – claimed the snap of his wearing upper-class get-up was meant as a private joke for his wife and daughter.

But the outspoken Scot tweeted the intimate snap to his 182, 257 followers earlier today.

Alastair Campbell meant to tweet this picture of him posing in a hunting outfit to his wife and daughter

Followers of Campbell were quick to tease the former Journalist about his “Tory” outfit, with one, Fiona Laird, writing: “Dangerous! I think you should say you had broken into David Cameron’s wardrobe.”

Stephen Lindop, added: “What are you doing in Tory hunting outfit?”

Campbell was quick to defend the picture, writing “Can’t believe this is on Twitter. Did I press the wrong button? Was sending it to my daughter and Fiona for a laugh because I hate Downtown.

“The perils of using iPhone without specs. Email next to tweet!

“Not my taste,” he added.

Earlier this year Campbell had a Twitter feud with The Thick of it Writer Armando Iannucci over the satirist’s acceptance of an OBE.

The outspoken Scot tweeted Iannucci: “OBE joins the Establishment he claims to deride. Malcolm Tucker and I do not approve of honours system.”

The outspoken Scot refers to a character in Iannucci’s satire The Thick Of It, a government spin doctor strongly believed to be based on Campbell.

The witty satirist hit back however, tweeting: “It’s probably more Establishment to order your army to march into other countries for no reason. Swings and roundabouts.”

SCOTS bra queen Michelle Mone has admitted accosting women in the street and forcing them to try on her bras.

The multi-millionairess, from Glasgow, confessed to her unusual habit on Twitter today, prompting one of her friends to joke that she was a “sex pest”.

The 40-year-old, who has an OBE and has made £39m with her underwear range, said there was no excuse for women to wear ill-fitting bras.

Michelle recently split from her husband of 20 years in December.

She spoke out against “four-breasted” women on Twitter, saying she had taken it upon herself to stop this unsightly problem.

Tweeting her 148,822 followers today, Mone wrote: “Yes I really did take a girl’s bra off in the street at 1am in Mayfair & fit her with samples I had. No need for bad fitting bra.

“Ladies hope you won’t mind me coming up to you if I see your bra riding up your back or spilling out creating four breasts! I’m watching.”

Her comments prompted one of her friends, Glamour magazine editor Jo Elvin, to joke she was a “sex pest”. Mone replied: “haha!”

On Twitter, followers seemed to admire the entrepreneur’s bra accosting ways. One, Ellen Kavanagh, tweeted: “Good! There have been sooooo many times I’ve wanted to do that to people. Say no to the four boob look girls!”

Another, Mark Davidson, added: “You know you’re the only person in the world that would get away with that!”

One tweeter, Jacqui Wright, joked: “You will end up getting a reputation.”

But one Twitter user, Christine Riley, took offense, tweeting to Mone: “Bad fitting bra can also be due to poverty I’m a single mum and wearing same bras for years as I can’t afford to buy one.”

The Ultimo businesswoman, who split from her husband Michael in December – after more than 20 years of marriage, is a keen social networker.

In May she urged Michael Bublé lookalikes to tweet pictures to her personal account.

She said: “We’ve now got Michael Bublé’s wife, Luisana, who is stunning.

“And I have to say, I’m in love with him as well. If there is a lookalike Michael Bublé out there, you can call me. You’d need to be able to sing as well. You’ve got to be in key for ‘Still haven’t met you yet.’”

TOP Scottish actor Robert Carlyle has turned on his own publicity machine – suggesting sections of an interview with him were made up.

The 51-year-old actor said the attempt by American broadcasters to drum up publicity for his latest US TV series, based on the Rumplestiltskin story, was “awful”.

Carlyle is currently starring in hit US fantasy drama ‘Once Upon a Time’ in which he plays a gruesome Rumplestiltskin character.

Robert starred in the 1996 film Trainspotting

To promote the release of the first series on DVD, studio bosses ABC distributed an interview with the actor.

But Carlyle went on Twitter to complain: “It’s been fleshed out so much with someone else’s words it’s really no longer me.”

The star rarely opens up in interviews and recently said he could see himself becoming a “grumpy old man”.

But the new interview contains effusive quotations from the Trainspotting star such as: “With everything going on in the world today, people need hope.

“That’s why fairytales were originally written: to encourage children to dream and to have hope.”

He adds: “Whenever the name [Rumplestiltskin] came up in my life, I always reacted to it – and suddenly I discovered it right in front of my eyes as a character to play in Once Upon A Time. Immediately, I knew this was the part for me.”

The actor, who is known for his intensity off and on the screen, made his feelings on the alleged fake interview on Twitter this week.

When Starry Mag – a celebrity focussed website in America, shared a link to the interview with Caryle, the horrified actor replied: “Don’t know who put this together but it’s awful. It’s been fleshed out so much with someone else’s words it’s really no longer me.”

Starry Mag were quick to point out that the interview was part of the official publicity for his new show, writing: “Our apologies, it was something sent to journalists by the studio to use in support of the show’s DVD release.”

Created by the makers of Lost, Once Upon a Time stars Hollywood beauty Ginnifer Goodwin, and follows a host of fairytale characters including Snow White, Prince Charming, Pinocchio and Red Riding Hood.

Carlyle plays a version of Rumplestiltskin, an evil fairytale character famous for blackmailing an innocent girl into handing over her firstborn child.

The actor is known for his intense method acting, once sleeping on the streets near London’s Waterloo station for five nights to prepare for playing a homeless man.

HE may be one of Hollywood’s most respected male stars but Brad Pitt has delivered a damning verdict on some of his most famous film roles.

Pitt, who was in Glasgow last summer filming Zombie flick World War Z, has laid into some of his much loved performances, saying he “flatlined” and “flunked”.

Speaking of his Oscar nominated role in Twelve Monkeys, Pitt said: “I think I was forced on Terry (Gilliam). I got the first half dead-on but I flunked the second.”

In an interview with a newspaper, he was even more scathing of his starring role in the 1998 film Meet Joe Black, saying: “I flatlined in that one.”

Pitt said he felt “miscast” in the Hollywood epic Interview with the Vampire, in which he starred alongside Tom Cruise and Christian Slater.

And on one of his first lead roles as a cowboy in Ridley Scott’s Thelma and Louise, he said: “That was the first time I was let into the show. I remember thinking, ‘oh that’s how I come off.’ I felt I could have had more weight.

Even though he spoke negatively about some of his most famous film roles, Pitt refused to say a bad word about the critically-panned 2005 release Mr and Mrs Jones, where he met his future partner, Angelina Jolie.

He said: “That was a monumental change for more reasons than one, six plus one, to be exact. I think the film has merit too. It’s really good fun,” he said.

Oscar Nominations

Earlier this week Pitt received two Oscar nominations for his role as producer and actor in Moneyball, where he acts alongside Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman as a baseball team manager who used computer-generated analysis to allow his small team to compete with the best.

He described the film, based on the real life of Oakland A’s manager Billy Beane, as “good stuff.”

To prepare for the role he spent time with Beane, who he says was “a funny fucker, sharp as a knife,” who, “shunned the limelight.”

He added: “He reminded me of the characters I love from the 70s films. When I started in film I was taught that you had to have a character arc and there had to be an epiphany. As the years went by I have found that to be utter bullshit. We don’t really change; we evolve in degrees and what I love about these characters from the 70s like Popeye Doyle is they were the same beast at the end of the film as they were at the beginning. I do love obsessive characters. I get off on watching that.”

Pitt may be enjoying critical success in his career, but he describes a darker time in his life, in the 90’s, when he says he was smoking too much dope.

He said; “I’d smoked a lot of weed. I was professional at it. I wasn’t participating in life. I was smoking myself into a doughnut, a mollusc. I got disgusted with it.”

He decided to quite the drug, a decision he is happy about now: “At the end I came to the simple conclusion that I wanted to make things and be a part of stories that were personal and that I could bring value to and if I got this opportunity, to contribute something to the zeitgeist of film-making.”

Parts of Glasgow were turned into war-torn ruins last September as Pitt filmed zombie movie World War Z.

Local’s were cast as zombie extras as a film crew of about 1,200 shot scenes at George Square and other city centre locations.

Glasgow City Council said the positive impact of the production on the local economy was likely to be in excess of £2m.
