Major clean-up after toppled lorry leads to chemical spillage on M9

By Rory Reynolds

A MAJOR clean-up operation had to be mounted after an articulated lorry toppled onto its side, covering a major motorway route with chemicals.

More than two dozen officers from Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue donned chemical protection suits to clean up the spill on the M9 spur near to the Forth Road Bridge.

The incident occurred around 12:30am yesterday morning, and led to the busy route being closed throughout the night, until 5.30am.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire confirmed that 23 firefighters and three senior officers handle the large-scale spill.

She said: “We attended an incident involving a lorry that had shed its load, which led to a chemical spill on the road.“The lorry was on its side when we arrived on the scene.

“Three appliances and three special vehicles attended the scene, and we used Chemical Protection Suits to assist with the clean-up of the chemicals, which have been confirmed as non-hazardous.”

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police added: “We can confirm that there was no harm to the public.

“The substance is reported to be a product used in the oil industry.”

The name of the company involved was not immediately available.
