The 25th annual Loony Dook – which pulled in 1,000 dookers and 3,000 spectators last year – has been added to the schedule of events during the city’s Hogmanay celebrations.
The event started in 1987 with just a handful of swimmers and over the years it has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity.
Lord Provost George Grubb said: “As a local councillor for South Queensferry, I have braved many a bitter New Year’s Day to witness – and, on two occasions, join – the hardy souls plunging into the Forth for the Loony Dook.
“It’s a great event with a terrific atmosphere and I’m delighted to see it become part of the official Edinburgh’s Hogmanay programme this year.”
Sponsorship will come from Haggis Adventures, a tour company for backpackers and independent travelers, who are hoping to secure the future of the event.
Peter Duncan, general operations manager of Haggis Adventures, said: “We are proud to be sponsors for such a unique and world famous event, especially when we get the chance to give back to some very worthy charities.
“The Loony Dook is a great example of what makes Edinburgh’s Hogmanay so exceptional and is a huge hit with our passengers.”
This year it will kick off with a Grand Parade through South Queensferry and participators can apply online from 9 November at www.edinburghshogmanay.com
A £6 registration fee will be donated to the RNLI South Queensferry.
Pete Irvine, director of Unique Events, which organises the Loony Dook, said “This is a fantastic event and one which has grown in popularity every year.
“We are delighted to be working with the Loony Dook team and new sponsors Haggis Adventures to secure the future of the event and ensure that it remains a popular, and safe, event for both the Dookers and spectators.”
David Steel, a spokesperson for Loony Dook, said: “I am delighted to continue with the excellent working relationship I have enjoyed with Unique Events and the City of Edinburgh Hogmanay team especially now that The Loony Dook is to be part of the official Edinburgh’s Hogmanay programme.
“It is true to say that the huge international popularity of the event has meant that we have become a victim of our own success but with the expertise which Unique brings to the table we can ensure that The Loony Dook will not only survive but will undoubtedly thrive.”
The event is part of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay programme, running from 30 December to 2 January, which also includes the Torchlight Procession, the Hogmanay Street Party with headliners Biffy Clyro and The Charlatans, and the traditional outdoor ceilidh event.
