Police investigating after two elderly women mugged in separate attacks

AN ELDERLY woman was mugged in broad daylight moments after she stepped off a bus.

The 87-year-old was pushed over by a man, believed to be around 20-years-old, who then grabbed her handbag and ran off.

The incident happened at around 2.40pm yesterday (Tuesday) on Mansionhouse Road, in the Grange area of Edinburgh.

It follows an attack on another elderly lady at the weekend less than a mile away.

The 84-year-old woman had been walking home along Findhorn Place at around 3.30pm on Saturday when she was robbed of her handbag and groceries.

Detectives say they have not ruled out the possibility that the two attacks are linked, but are keeping an open mind.

In both incidents the suspect was wearing dark clothes and a beanie hat.

A police spokesman said: “While the elderly woman wasn’t injured, she was understandably distressed as a result of what happened, and we are appealing for any information that can help us trace the suspect.

“Anyone who was in the area of Mansionhouse Road between 2.30pm and 3pm yesterday, who either witnessed the incident or saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area, should contact police immediately.

“Similarly, anyone who recognises the description of the suspect, or who has any other information that can help our inquiries, should also get in touch.”

Anyone with any information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
