Lorraine Kelly yomps into action for Soldiers’ Charity

Lorraine puts the five soldiers through their paces

NATIONAL treasure and Honorary Colonel of the Black Watch Cadets, Lorraine Kelly, today (Fri) put a group of soldiers through their paces.

Training in her hometown of Dundee, Lorraine joined five soldiers exercising ahead of the 52 mile yomp, which takes place in Perthshire next year.

Going into its second year, the Alliance Trust Cateran Yomp raises money for The Soldiers’ Charity which makes financial grants to support serving and former soldiers and their families in their time of need.

The Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust – which awards loans and grants to small businesses acrossScotland– will receive a third of the proceeds as the chosen charity of the title sponsor Alliance Trust.

Lorraine Kelly said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be supporting the 2012 Alliance Trust Cateran Yomp.  The Yomp is not just a challenging event to take part in, but it also raises money for a hugely deserving charity.

Camaraderie

“The work that The Soldiers Charity carries out directly benefits the servicemen and women who fight for our country, so I’m encouraging everyone to participate in next year’s event and to start training soon.”

A ’yomp’ is the term used by soldiers for a long distance march carrying their full kit. However, the Alliance Trust Cateran Yomp offers challenges and surprises including archery, clay pigeon shooting and adventurous activities along the way.

Katherine Garrett-Cox, CEO of the Alliance Trust said: “Following the launch of the Alliance Trust Cateran Yomp earlier this year, we are set to make next year’s event even bigger and better.  Last year, we saw different teams of colleagues, friends and families come together to take on the Yomp together, and the camaraderie amongst the teams across the weekend was inspiring.  We hope more teams will sign up this year and help make a difference to two great charities that support people across the country.”

Robin Bacon, Chief of Staff at The Soldiers’ Charity said: “The Soldiers’ Charity works with soldiers and former soldiers and families across theUKto support them in return for their dedication to our country.  The Alliance Trust Cateran Yomp is a fantastic opportunity to take part in an event that combines determination, hard work, fun and charity in aid of a worthwhile and honourable organisation.”
