Teen killed in New Year’s Day crash

Crews were called after the car hit a tree in the Borders

A TEENAGER has died and another has been seriously injured in a New Year’s Day car crash.

The 18-year-old was a passenger a blue Mitsubishi Evo on the A697 in the Borders.

Their car left the road and hit a tree near Whiteburn Farm, Westruther at around 7.10pm.

Ambulance crews pronounced the 18-year-old dead, while the 17-year-old driver was taken to Edinburgh’s Western General Hospital with serious head injuries.

His condition is described as critical.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue said: “We were called to an RTA at around 7.10pm.

“The car had left the road and struck a tree on the A967 near Whiteburn Farm, West Struther.

“There were two adult males involved and one was fatally injured.”

No details of the victim are being released at present.
