His partner, who was away at the time, discovered his body when she returned to their flat at 5pm on Sunday.

Mr Duncan, originally from the north of Edinburgh, had lived in the area since 2011 and was well-known locally.

The family are “utterly devastated” and Mr Duncan’s son is receiving support from the authorities.

Police are treating the “horrendous” incident as murder and are appealing for anyone who may have information.

They are especially keen to know Mr Duncan’s whereabouts between Thursday evening and Sunday.

Speaking from outside the flat, Detective Inspector Martin MacLean described the murder as “tremendously distressing”.

He said: “Any murder is horrendous and the family are utterly devastated.

“We are asking for anyone with information about this tremendously distressing incident to come forward.

“At this time we cannot pinpoint when Mr Duncan was murdered and we are keen to find out his whereabouts between 5pm on Thursday and Sunday afternoon.

“We urge anyone who may have seen suspicious movements around the flat during this time, or who may have seen Mr Duncan during this time, to come forward.

“Anyone with information that can help us trace the person responsible is asked to contact us on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Mr Duncan is described as 5ft 7in, white and slim with receding brown greying hair.

He was last seen wearing a maroon zip-up jacket, a bright red shirt with white stripes and dark jeans.
