Jon Daly pays tribute to on-loan Dundee kid Craig Wighton as Raith Rovers learn extent of injury

Raith Rovers striker Jon Daly hopes to see Craig Wighton make a swift return to action following his injury scare against Hibs.

The 18-year-old, a second half substitute himself, had to be replaced following a hard-but-fair challenge by Hibs stalwart Lewis Stevenson during the Hibees’ 2-1 win in Kirkcaldy.

Raith boss Ray McKinnon confirmed the initial prognosis suggested Wighton, who is on-loan from Ladbrokes Premiership side Dundee, has suffered cruciate knee ligament damage.

However, scans at Ninewells Hospital on Saturday evening showed it was an impact injury, rather than a break or muscle damage.

And that is sure to delight Daly, who has forged a strong relationship with Wighton on their commutes to training from Tayside.

He said: “There’s six of us traveling from Dundee every day to training and I travel with Craig [Wighton] and Lewis Toshney.

“So I’ve got to know Craig well and he’s a young lad who wants to learn. Hopefully he won’t be on the sidelines too long. He’s a great lad and he’s a good player as well.

“I thought he had done really well to create the yard of space for himself and it looked as though he was just about to stick it away when Lewis Stevenson made a great tackle.”
