Former Hearts and Hibernian defender Adam Eckersley has joined Canadian side FC Edmonton following his Easter Rad exit – and his first match will see him return to Scotland.

The 30-year-old was a free agent following a six-month stint with the Hibees, where he failed to make a single senior appearance following knee surgery last summer.

Eckersley’s season-long spell with the Jambos proved more fruitful, with the experienced full-back playing 27 times and scoring two goals during Hearts’ march to the Championship title during the 2014/15 campaign

However, the former Manchester United, Port Vale, Horsens and AGF Aarhus has chosen to continue his career in the North American Soccer League next term.

Eckersley’s younger brother, Richard, thrived in Canada with MLS side Toronto FC before joining the New York Red Bulls, and Adam was known to be keen to follow in his footsteps.

And Eckersley will not have long to wait before returning to these shores, with Edmonton set to kick-off their pre-season preparations with a trip to Scotland in March.

They will face Patrick Thistle (13/3), Airdrie (15/3), Newcastle Reserves (17/3) and Queen’s Park (22/3) before beginning their domestic campaign on April 2.
