Queen of the South manager James Fowler insists his side can hang on to their play-off place when they go up against Rangers on Sunday.

The Doonhamers climbed back into the Championship top four for the first time in six months at the weekend with a narrow 1-0 win over St Mirren.

Fowler’s side were beaten in play-off quarter-finals by Rangers last season

Queens are now two points clear of Raith Rovers and on course to replicate last season’s fourth place finish.

And Fowler has no intention of vacating that spot anytime soon – even though Rangers visit this weekend.

Fowler said: “Rangers are a good team, they’ve got good players and a big budget to work with as well, but we feel we’ve got players that can go and compete.

“We’ve done okay against them this year.

“In the first home game we got a red card that was later rescinded and that affected the game.

“They scored a last minute winner at Ibrox as well so we know we can compete.

“The play-offs are where we want to be, we’ve got a run of games that are difficult so it was important we got the win against St Mirren.

“I know there’s going to be lots of twists and turns. St Mirren, Raith and Morton are all in the mix so we know it’s tough but we feel we’ve got the players that can do it if everyone plays to their maximum.”
