TERRIFYING footage has captured the moment a “crazy” van driver stops dead across two lanes of motorway traffic after taking the wrong turn off.
The dashcam footage, taken on the M11 near London, shows vehicles swerving to avoid the van, which is stationary, straddled across two lanes, after mistakenly going up a slip road.
The manoeuvre has been described by experts as “one of the dumbest” they have ever seen.
At the start of the video, the driver of the dash cam vehicle is slowing down, and many other vehicles can be seen with their brake lights on, whilst one flashes its hazard lights to warn other drivers.
Moments into the 15-second clip, the white van comes into view, parked across the two lanes of the motorway.
One vehicle, travelling at around 50mph swerves to avoid the parked van, who can be seen trying to cross the centre chevrons back onto the main carriageway.
At the end of the video, the person filming the clip grinds to a halt just behind the van, which eventually manages to successfully merge with the traffic in the next lane.
The video has gone viral after being uploaded onto the Idiot UK Drivers Exposed Facebook page last night.
The video, uploaded with the caption “Unbelievable! Idiot Van driver of the year!” has been viewed almost 60,000 times.
A spokesman for Scotland’s Worst Drivers said he hoped the van driver lost their license.
He said: “This manoeuvre is one of the dumbest I have seen in a very long time.
“Leaving the M11 you are still doing close to 70 as you slow to 50. Lucky the driver has seen him because had they not, this could have been a very bad accident.
“What’s more crazy about this stupid move, is had he continued up the slip road, he could have rejoined at the other side.
“I wonder if the driver even has a driving license, and if he does I sure hope it won’t be for much longer!”
A spokesman for The AA said “The driver of the van was incredibly lucky his actions did not cause a serious accident.”
“This manoeuvre was utterly stupid and completely dangerous. Some people will do desperate things once they realise they have taken a wrong turn or are on the wrong road.”
“The reasons for the action are by no means an excuse. The driver should have taken the slip road and looked to re-join his original route at the next available opportunity.”
Facebook users were quick to slam the van driver in the video.
Anthony Linford said: “Ballsy move eh? I mean he had stuff to deliver and that’s much more important than human life! The t**t will try the same or worse again, so be vigilant people!”
Paul Price quipped: “That level of stupidity takes practice and determination.”
Mike Byrne added: “Typical he did not even have his indicator on what a silly man.”
But some users actually blamed the cam car for not slowing down quick enough when approaching the obstruction.
Chris Turner said: “I’m watching this and thinking “where is the camera car trying to go?”
The van driver is an absolute b*d, no questions asked. But the camera vehicle then trying to head as though to go round in front of the van?!”
Chris Ellison joked: “Ah, I get it. The idiot is the person who continues to drive towards an obstruction they’ve seen with their lights flashing.”
