Police release video of shocking moment jaywalking pensioners are hit by lorry

SHOCKING video shows the moment a careless couple are hit and injured by an lorry after they try to weave through busy traffic.

The pair, who appear to be elderly, walk behind a bus and into the blind spot of the lorry.

As the lorry takes off, the couple realise the danger and try to run for the safety of the opposite pavement but appear to be hit a glancing blow before the driver brakes.

The incident took place at the junction between Poole Road and Seamoor Road in Bournemouth, Dorset, and was released by police to highlight the dangers of jaywalking.

Dorset Traffic Cops wrote: “Warning. Some people may find this video upsetting.

“Whilst a lot of our work is around the standards of driving, sometimes, we need to offer advice to other people.

“If you are a pedestrian, please consider where you cross the road, especially if there are large vehicles around.

“Be mindful that you might not be easily seen by the driver. If there is a designated crossing point, our advice would be to use it.

“Thankfully in this incident, no-one was seriously hurt, but it could have been so much more serious.”

The clip begins with CCTV looking down Poole road from the junction of Seamoor Road.

The road appears to be one way, with a lorry in the right hand lane, and a bus in the left lane.

Both come to a standstill, with an old looking couple deciding to take advantage of the quiet moment by making a dash.

They come round the back of the bus and to the passenger side door of the lorry.

The traffic suddenly begins moving, with the bus taking off first.

Noticing this, the two start running around the front of the lorry, but it too begins to take off while they are in front.

Because the windscreen stands so high off the ground, the driver seems oblivious to the potentially life-or-death situation developing in front of the lorry.

The lorry knocks into the couple, as they desperately try to escape being run over, and are pushed out of frame of the CCTV.

Finally the lorry makes an emergency stop, the driver visible in the window making a quick swerve to his right before the clip ends.

Most of the comments below the video were critical of the couple for taking such unnecessary risk.

Ashley Main wrote: “I drive HGV’s for a living and see this all the time. The worst offenders are usually young mums with pushchairs.”

Richard Turner commented: “Glad to hear the pedestrians are ok, but the consequences could have been a lot worse. Being a HGV Driver and having to deal with these scenarios everyday .the dangers are real. I find worst people are the ones with earphones in totally oblivious to what’s going on around them.”

Barbara Anderson said: “Hope they were at least cautioned for jaywalking. That poor lorry driver must have had such a shock.”

Edward Conley remarked: “Idiots.”

Dorset Traffic Cops also commented underneath, adding: “The lorry driver is not to blame and the pedestrians wanted the video to be shared to highlight the risks involved in what they did.

“Luckily they only received minor injuries, but in another case in the past couple of years a pedestrian sustained a lot more serious injuries.”
