Heriot-Watt and business partners unveils plans for Dubai Expo

HERIOT-Watt University and its business partners are set to showcase their work at Expo 2020 Dubai.

The event, postponed from last year, is expected to attract 25 million visits between October 1 and March 31, 2022.

The UK, one of 190 countries taking part, is theming its pavilion as “Innovating for a Shared Future”.

Heriot-Watt reckons it’s well placed to take part by demonstrating work from its global innovation and research institutes.

The university will focus on how artificial intelligence, robotics, net zero, energy and health are shaping the future.

Dr Gillian Murray, deputy principal for enterprise and business at Heriot-Watt said: “For 170 years, World Expos have provided a platform from which to showcase the greatest innovations that have shaped or will change the world we live in.

“That’s why Heriot-Watt University is proud to be a supporting partner of the UK at the World Expo 2020 in Dubai.”

Murray added: “Taking part in Expo 2020 demonstrates our continued commitment to sharing our expertise and working with global business partners.

“For Heriot-Watt to be one of four UK partners at this global gathering is a golden opportunity to showcase our expertise.”

Murray said the university was committed to the delivery of high-quality education in the UAE regions.

The university has an established campus and state-of-the-art facility at Dubai Knowledge Park.

“Through these unique facilities for students and research delivery, we will continue to make an outstanding impact for society,” she said.

Simon Penney, Consul General to Dubai and trade commissioner for the region, said: “It is great to have Heriot-Watt University as a partner of the UK.

“With over 40% of international schools in the world using the British curriculum, UK education expertise is in high demand.

“We look forward to demonstrating the best of the UK alongside Heriot-Watt at the UK Pavilion.”

Heriot-Watt is celebrating the 200th anniversary of its founding in Scotland.

The university has campuses in Dubai, Malaysia, Edinburgh, Orkney and the Scottish Borders.

Heriot-Watt was the first British university in Dubai International Academic City.

Earlier this year, it opened a new campus at Dubai Knowledge Park, serving close to 4,000 students, representing 105 nationalities from around the world.
