Health Benefits of Eating the Right Foods

Our immune system serves as a bastion against illness, disease, and infection. It is the body’s natural defense mechanism, without which we would surely expire. A healthy immune system works to attack invading entities, disabling them in quick succession. These microorganisms, if left unchecked, have the capacity to seriously undermine our health and wellness.

A healthy immune system is the only way we can live a good quality of life. When germs attack, your immune system is the go-to defense mechanism; it overwhelms the invading entities, shutting them down and keeping you safe.

There are many ways to promote a healthy immune system, including exercise, stress relief, diet, supplements, environmental factors, and medications. Synergism and balance are required to enjoy a healthy immune system. As a field of study, immune systems continue to baffle researchers, and medical professionals.

We don’t quite know about the causal links between immune function and lifestyle choices. Suffice it to say, smart decisions should bode well for your immune system. While there are no guarantees regarding failsafe ways of enhancing the immune system, we do know that healthy living helps our immune systems.

What Can We do to Strengthen Our Immune System?

There are several commonsense approaches that can be adopted to improve overall health, cleanliness, and good habits. These include regular handwashing. When outside, and interacting with the environment and other people, avoid touching your mouth, eyes, ears, and nose. These are instant passageways to the body, and the perfect incubators for bacterial and viral infections.

Diet is an essential part of health and wellness. By eating balanced foods on a daily basis, with more proteins, fruits and vegetables, you can ensure a much healthier GI tract, better nutrition, and a healthier body. By the same token, alcohol consumption should be limited to avoid poisoning the kidneys and the liver, causing constipation, and dehydration. All of this is done to promote a healthy body weight, and body-mass index (BMI).

Supplementation of your diet is equally important when considering ways of strengthening your immune system. A fascinating field of study has centered around medicinal mushrooms for immune system enhancement, notably Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi Mushrooms), Lentinula edodes (Shiitake Mushrooms), Cordyceps militaris (Cordyceps), and Grifola frondosa (Maitake), among others.

Mushrooms contain powerful nutrients, minerals, and medicinal properties. The ancient Chinese first recognised these benefits thousands of years ago, and incorporated mushrooms into traditional medicine. The many benefits of mushrooms have been highlighted in numerous studies over the years, including a recent study by Elsevier Public Health Emergency Collection. Mushrooms are rich in beta glucans, a unique form of polysaccharides.

ScienceDaily, a leading scientific journal published an article on 16 April 2015, titled, ‘Mushrooms Boost Immunity, Suggests Research’. Early evidence of the shiitake mushroom indicates that boosted immunity can take place with these native Asian mushrooms known for their medicinal properties. A University of Florida research paper stated that if you eat a shiitake mushroom daily you could see changes in your immune system that are beneficial. Participants in the study were not allowed to be vegans/vegetarians. Additionally, participants were not allowed to consume more than 14 glasses of alcohol per week, or consume more than 7 vegetables/fruit servings per day.

An Immune System Work in Progress

Believe it or not, supplements may not always have the desired effect in terms of boosting the performance of your immune system. This is evident when athletes inject themselves with additional blood in an attempt to boost the number of blood cells in their bodies. Unfortunately, this can lead to strokes, blood clots, and collapse.

It is unknown which cells need to be boosted, and in what quantities, in order for an immune system to function optimally. We do know that our bodies are dynamic vessels, capable of naturally generating immunity. Apoptosis is the natural process by which excess lymphocytes are removed from the body, but the precise quantities of immune boosting cells remains an enigma to this day.
