What to check when buying a used car

When you’re looking to buy a second hand or used car, there are some things that you have to look at.

Car history

One of the first things you want to check when you spot a car that you want is to check the car history. You need to get as much information as possible from the owner or the dealership.

There are free and paid services that can assist you. They can run the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and tell you about the car’s history. For example, if there were any recalls for that particular model or if the car had been in an accident.

Any damage

Before you buy a car, you might want to take a close look at the car. When you’re perusing the car, it’s a good idea to take a stroll around the car to check for any rust or chipped paint.

You can fix any small rust spots or chipped paint. So it might not put you off. It also won’t cost an arm and a leg to fix. You’ll want to move on to the next car if it’s completely rusted.

You should also check for any possible problems with the frame when you’re taking a walk around the car. The car should be level to the ground. You should also check that nothing is hanging out from the undercarriage.

Before you buy the car, you should also pay special attention to the bumper. Are there any dents? You should also check if there are cracks or is there any peeling in the paint?

Check under the hood

It’s essential to check the car’s engine before you put any down payment on the vehicle. You will need to check the engine under the hood while the vehicle is off.

When you’ve popped the hood, check the engine for any corrosion, cracked hoses, belts and fluid leaks. You’ll also need to check the colour of the oil and transmission. Your transmission fluid is either red or pink, and your oil colour should be light brown.

Check the tire condition

Another essential thing to check is the condition of the car’s tires. You’ll need to check the tire tread and its alignment. The tire tread should be even on all four of them.

If the car has uneven tires or if there is even uneven wear, it means that the vehicle has poor alignment. Poor alignment could be a result of any frame issues, suspension, or steering problems.

How many miles has the car driven

Checking the mileage of a used car is essential. You’ll want to check if the mileage is too high compared to the asking price. On average, a used car manages to run up about 12500 miles (ca. 20,117 km).

A used car with a high mileage might have more wear and tear on it. If you want to work out if the mileage is high, there’s a formula you can use. You can divide the mileage by the car’s age.

Check the interior and electronics

Buyers sometimes overlook checking the interiors and the electronics. It wouldn’t be fun driving your car without playing your favourite song.

You’ll want to press the buttons to ensure that the electronics and stereo are in working order. You’ll also want to test that the air conditioning and heater are working.

While you’re checking the electronics, you should also take a look at the interior. Check front and back seats for any cracked leather, stains, and tears.

Get it checked by a mechanic.

When you think you’ve found your next car, there’s another step that you should take. You should let a competent mechanic test out the vehicle.

The mechanic can check if the car has any undisclosed issues or damage that could be a problem in the long run. It might be expensive, but it could save you from any costly problems in the future.
