PREVIEW – Royal Conservatoire of Scotland – The Hip-Hop Orchestra Experience

Venue: TheSpace Triplex (Venue 38) Time: 23:35 Dates: 5th-14th August, Ticket prices: £12 and £10 concessions.

SCOTTISH classical musicians from the Royal Conservatoire are set to join “boundary-bending” US hip-hop artists for an inspirational show at Edinburgh Fringe.

Mozart, Beethoven and Bach will be reimagined by Californian hip-hop artists and Scottish classical musicians.

The Hip-Hop Orchestra Experience will see around 15 young musicians from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland join US rapper Young Reshaud and turf dancer Yung Phil of Ensemble Mik Nawooj (EMN) on stage at the Edinburgh Fringe from 5th-14th August.

And it could just be the start of an ongoing transatlantic collaboration.

Samantha McShane, Head of Artistic Planning at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, said: “The team at EMN are bending the boundaries of genres and creating inspiring, relevant, and important art.

“The spirit of the Ensemble creates the perfect environment for creative collaboration between Royal Conservatoire of Scotland students and alumni and EMN.

“We are very excited about the potential for this relationship between both organisations to grow. Watch this space!”

EMN seamlessly fuse hip-hop and classical to offer up a mix of music including works by some of the great composers – deconstructed and reimagined with funky rhythms and rapid fire rhymes.

It pushes hard at the boundaries of both hip-hop and concert music creating something entirely new.

The line-up puts US rapper Young Reshaud and turf dancer Yung Phil on stage with a line-up that features full strings, woodwind, French horn and soprano.

The Hip-Hop Orchestra Experience is the creation of EMN co-founders the composer JooWan Kim and producer Christopher Nicholas.

Its in-person presence in Edinburgh builds on the success of highly-rated digital Fringe performance, pre-recorded at San Fransisco’s Asian Arts Museum, last year.

Praise included: “Oh, I like this! Very cool!” from the BBC and :“If you’re into hip-hop, classical music or both this is a must see”, from Three Weeks in Edinburgh (TWE).

The show’s music comes from the EMN album Death Become Life which creates meta music using Kim’s “method sampling” approach which involves borrowing from unrelated rationales (methods) and reframing them.
