RENOWNED fashion designer Richard Raeburn has urged consumers to boycott Black Friday – and has started by disabling his own online shop.

The London-based designer announced on Instagram today: “We’ve disabled the shop section of our website and closed our pop-up store for Black Friday.

“We simply cannot continue to consume the way we do. We need to start making considered choices; buying less but better.

“We’re therefore encouraging you to think twice before you make a purchase today. Even small steps will help and it’s important we all work together.”

The photograph plastered across his social media accounts also appears on the homepage of his website.

Han_Josef responded: “Great thought process. Meaningful purpose.”

Jameswicksphoto added: “Great leadership. Respect. Less is more.”

Antoniofiengo wrote: “Thank you for this! Thoughts and actions are the only things that really make a difference!”

Officialnonames said: “Fantastic! Very bold values and we applaud.”

However, Yiotaden reckoned it was just a marketing ploy.

The social media user wrote: “Making considerate choices as a person and consumer is something you do all year round and not only on Black Friday.

“Closing your shops, does not provide a solution to the mass consumption of high street brands. This looks like another marketing technique.”

Raeburn is known for reusing surplus fabrics to create a new range of clothing and accessories for both men and women.

The company says its ethos is underpinned by the “four Rs”: Remade, reduced, recycled and Raeburn.
