MORRISONS has been forced to change the packaging on their “non-EU” chicken following backlash from customers.
Fuming customer Lee Williscroft-Ferris hit out at the supermarket on Twitter yesterday for their choice of wording on their British Salt & Pepper Chicken Crown.
The £4 roast-in-the bag chicken is being sold complete with the words “made from British chicken and non-EU salt and pepper” alongside a union jack flag.
Customers have since threatened to boycott the supermarket for the wording which has been described as a “gratuitous slight on the EU”.
Morrisons last night apologised for the packaging and said they would be “changing the packaging immediately”.
The U-turn came after Lee tweeted images of the chicken to Morrisons on Twitter yesterday.
He wrote: “Tell me @Morrisons that this is not real. Your response will dictate whether or not I ever shop at your stores again.
The tweet has since gained almost 4,000 likes and over 1,500 comments from social media users.
@DGBright wrote: “I’m done with shopping @Morrisons. I can live with union flags on bananas, but the gratuitous slight on the EU is too much.”
@mozdt said: “Goodbye @Morrisons, don’t shop with you very often, but that has just been upgraded to ‘never’.”
@Simdru commented: “Could you imagine a French supermarket selling salt & vinegar crisps with ‘Non-British salt’ emblazoned across it?
“No, I can’t either, because they’re not as obsessed with non-existent threats from abroad as we seem to be.”
And @AislingHealy added: “It says British Chicken, so if the salt and pepper was also British they’d proudly state it. Non-EU means it has come from far, far away!”
Morrisons replied to one of the tweets last night apologising for the packing and claiming that they were going to rectify the issue.
They said: “The wording on the packaging is an error for which we apologise.
“We are changing the packaging immediately.”
Despite this, the product today still appears on the Morrisons website with the same wording.
