Bayern Munich will be without Franck Ribery for their forthcoming Champions League double header against Celtic after the former France playmaker sustained a serious knee injury.

The 34-year-old was forced off in the second half of Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Hertha Berlin and tests have confirmed that he has torn a lateral collateral ligament (LCL).

The Bundesliga champions have put no timescale on Ribery’s return but have said that the influential midfielder is out for the ‘coming weeks’.

The 81-times capped player, however, is certain to miss the Group B visit of Celtic on October 18 and the return clash in Glasgow at the end of the month.

Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: “We’re sorry Franck has hurt himself. We all wish him a quick and good improvement.”

Managerless Bayern are already without Manuel Neuer until January after the German international goalkeeper broke his foot.
