Most Romantic Road Trips Through Europe

Road trips can be a very romantic affair. They allow you to embark on a journey as a couple and experience a new and exciting country together. As is often the case with such trips the location and the trip itself are equally important parts of the fun and the time spent on the road gives you a chance to get to know each other in a new setting.

When traveling abroad you’ll need an international drivers license for both drivers, as well as a national permit and a photo ID.

A Trip Through Belgium and Netherlands

A trip from Brussels through Bruges and ending in Amsterdam is one of the most romantic you can take in Europe. There are also plenty of stops you can make in between if you have the time and inclination to do so. These include: Ghent, Antwerp, Rotterdam, The Hague and Leiden.

It’s best to take about ten days for such a trip so that you can truly appreciate the history and the arts you’ll find in the cities you visit. Don’t forget to leave at least some time to just wander around and take in the sites.

A Road Trip in Italy

Italy is one of the most romantic countries in Europe and whenever you go you’ll have perfect scenery to fall in love in. However, not all routes are tailor-made for a road trip and convenience may somewhat limit your options.

Start in Rome and finish your trip to Florence. This will give you plenty of time to soak in the local culture, history, and arts, as well as the scenic nature along the road. It’s best to take between 10 and 15 days for such a trip.

A Road Trip from Paris to Tours

Paris is known as the city of love and that’s where you should start your road trip through France. Many that decide to take this trip make a loop and start and finish their tour in Paris itself leaving a few famous destinations for their trip back.

Tours is the capital of the Loire Valley and it’s too often overlooked by tourists which is why it makes a perfect stop on your road trip. The whole ride should take about 7 days if you want to make all the stops.

From France to Monaco

Every trip to the south of France is a pleasure of its own, but it should also be the opportunity to visit Monaco. Cote D Azur is one of the most beautiful coasts in the world and just the drive alongside it is somewhat magical. Monaco is also the world capital of high-end shopping and that’s how most tourists spend their time there.

Most of these tours start in Nice and then move on to Sant-Tropez and Cannes, all the way to Monte Carlo, where you can enjoy the high-end casinos. The trip takes about a week or up to ten days.

Les Corniches, France

Another way to explore France is to focus on its coastline rather than its famous cities. Cliff Road is one of the most beautiful and scenic coastlines in Europe and the drive itself will remain one of the most cherished memories you’ll have from this trip.

The luxurious resort Saint John Cap Ferrat is nearby and many couples decide to spend a few nights there, usually with a room with a view of the sea. It’s also a common location for honeymoon trips from which you can base the rest of your stay in France.

Czech Republic, Austria, and Hungary

This wonderful itinerary is often overlooked because it doesn’t get the same hype as France and Italy. However, it’s one of the most beautiful and scenic trips you could take in this part of Europe. The cities are ancient and the majestic remains of the empire they were once in are still there.

There’s plenty of arts and culture to explore but you’ll find the strolls through the scenery that seems to emerge from a fairy tale the most romantic. A trip should take at least ten days if you want to truly explore the many museums and galleries along the way.

From Madrid To Barcelona

Madrid is one of the most beautiful and cosmopolitan cities in Europe. It’s also a seat of the ancient country with a rich and complex history and exploring it could take you weeks if you want to pay each destination the attention it deserves.

Spain itself is a rather diverse country with a complex cultural landscape and nowhere is that more noticeable than when you visit Barcelona and experience the differences between the two. The whole trip should take you about a week.

A Trip From Germany to Switzerland

Germany and Switzerland are perfect for a romantic trip because of their beautiful castles, ancient cities, and romantic landscapes. You can start in Munich and move to Zurich and Lucerne as most tourists do. The Neuschwanstein Castle is along the way and you should dedicate at least a day of travel to visiting and exploring it.

The trip overall should take about 9 days and it’s a bit over 400 km long. Keep in mind that EU laws don’t apply in Switzerland and you’ll need to purchase a separate vignette to keep on your car while driving through it.

Slovenia and Croatia

Slovenia and Croatia are too often overlooked as romantic destinations and it’s a mistake to do so. Ljubljana is a beautiful city with a clear Austrian influence when it comes to its architecture and overall aesthetic. It’s also quite small and charming, making it a perfect place for a romantic getaway.

The Croatian coastline, on the other hand, is among the most beautiful in Europe and it offers everything you expect from a Mediterranean resort. Dubrovnik is a must-see as an ancient city made famous once again for playing King’s Landing in Game of Thrones.  The trip will take about 10 days.
