Scots campaign aims to help set up safe spaces for youngsters in schools

A SCOTS campaign aiming to help set up safe spaces for youngsters in schools will take an important step forward today.

‘Oor Fierce Girls’ is a campaign group made up of teenage girls looking to support healthy relationships and to combat peer sexual abuse.

Today, an animation promoting the campaign will be unveiled at Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA).

The animated characters in the short film describe how safe spaces can be created in classrooms and other settings.

Attendees of today’s free event at the DCA will be able to learn more about the noteworthy group and get to know the young minds behind the campaign.

Since June 2021 NSPCC Scotland, The Young Women’s Movement, and Dundee City Council have collaborated with the group of teens to develop the targeted campaign.

It hopes to further educate young women and girls about what a healthy relationship is or feels like and where to turn for support or guidance.

To offer helpful advice on how to begin conversations on these topics, they have developed three toolkits: one for parents and caregivers, one for professionals who deal with young people, and one for young people

A senior pupil at school in Dundee said: “Safe spaces in schools are crucial for creating a safe and positive environment.

“The animation about safe spaces has to be one of the most rewarding aspects of the campaign and it will hopefully bring many more on board with the idea of having safe spaces in school.”

Dundee city council depute children and families convener Councillor, Roisin Smith, said: “I am always impressed by the energy and determination shown by Oor Fierce Girls in every project they undertake. They truly are an inspiration.

“Their latest creation will be an important resource for schools looking to set up safe spaces and I congratulate them on yet another tremendous achievement.”

The event is from 5.30pm to 6.30pm at the DCA, 152 Nethergate, Dundee, and refreshments will be available.
