Favourites to win the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup

We will see this year’s favourite, Argentina take on the 2018 FIFA World Cup runner-up, Croatia, for the first semi-final match on 14 December. Just who among the two will reign victorious? Will it be Messi and co. or the steady and experienced Croatia? It will be interesting to see Messi go against Modric in this semi-final match.

Argentina vs. Croatia

Croatia is one of the favourites to win the semi-finals as they have proved to the world once again that they are a serious contender for this year’s World Cup throughout the tournament. This would be Croatia’s second consecutive semi-final. Their 2018 World Cup final defeat to France could just be the experience they need to beat Argentina this year. Having the experience from the previous World Cup coupled with this year’s on-form team will surely help Croatia as they go against Argentina this Wednesday.

Recap of Croatia’s progress throughout the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Croatia remained strong as they scored four goals and conceded only one to rank second behind Morocco in the group stages. In the knock stages, we saw them being able to level their opponents after conceding early in the matches against Japan and Brazil to keep their World Cup hopes alive. Not forgetting how incredibly calm and reliable their penalty kick shootouts are. The Croatian goalkeeper, Dominik Livakovic, majorly contributed to their success by blocking three shots in the Round of 16 matches against Japan and one shot from Rodrygo in the quarter-final match against Brazil. The trio consisting of Luka Modric, Marcelo Brozovic, and Mateo Kovacic was also instrumental in the win against Brazil as the Croatian midfielders could control the game and keep the ball to stop Brazilian’s game-makers like Neymar and Raphinha from creating chances. Although Modric is 37 at this year’s World Cup, we are still seeing him play at his absolute best and dominate in the midfield battle against Brazil. To be 37 and unstoppable is rare, but this is just what Modric can do with Croatia. We’re excited to see Croatia challenge Argentina to an exciting match.

France vs. Morocco

The second semi-final match will surely be an exciting one as defending champion France will go against strong underdogs Morocco. Could France be the first team in 60 years to retain the FIFA World Cup title? Or will the North African team stun the world yet again to beat their strong opponent? It will surely be unwise to rule out Morocco from winning as they proved to cause unexpected upsets.

Recap of Morocco’s progress throughout the 2022 FIFA World Cup

This has been an extraordinary year for Morocco. From expected wins to breaking records in the World Cup. We saw Morocco upset strong contenders like 2018, second runner-up Belgium in the group stages and top Group F, which makes them the first African team to secure seven points in the group stages. Morocco broke another record when they became the first Arab nation to advance to the quarter-finals by beating Spain in a penalty shootout. If you think that’s all, then you’re mistaken. Morocco continued to break the ceiling to represent Africa and the Arab nation to reach the semi-finals by defeating Portugal by 1-0.

Morocco has taught us to expect the unexpected. But one thing is certain: their solid defending contributed majorly to their victories in this year’s World Cup. They have yet to concede any goals (excluding the own goal scored in the match against Canada in the group stages). To win against France, they need to ensure their unbreakable defence stops French game-makers Mbappe and Giroud from creating opportunities. We could see Morocco’s all-time goalscorer, En-Nesyri and Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech press forward more to create multiple chances. Could Morocco advance to the final of this year’s FIFA World Cup?

Expect drama-filled semi-final matches

If there’s anything we learned from the World Cup, anything can happen. We will never know which players will step up and bring glory to their teams. Could we see Croatia go against Morocco in the most unexpected final? Or would there be another case of deja vu with Croatia and France in the finals again? Let’s tune in on 14 December and 15 December to find out! Don’t forget to place your 2022 fifa betting Malaysia in the meantime.
