Still Game actress Jane McCarry jokes she was “destined to play Isa” with adorable childhood photo

STILL Game actress Jane McCarry has joked she was “destined to play Isa” as she shared an adorable childhood photo of her bearing a spitting resemblance to her nosey character.

The 52-year-old first rose to fame in 2002 as Isa Drennan in Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill’s much-loved Scots sitcom Still Game.

Isa, a stereotypical busybody, can often be seen working in the local newsagents for Navid or gossiping with friends in the local pub, The Clansman.

Throughout the series, she can often be spotted sporting a short silver bob, a faux-fur hat, thick brown glasses, a tawny trench coat and multiple layers of warm clothing.

Now Glasgow-born McCarry has left fans chuckling with two photos of herself, showing the hilarious similarities between her as a child and Isa’s character.

One image shows Isa wearing her infamous bonnet and thick glasses whilst clad in a brown coat, red cardigan, blue floral shirt and a blue polo-neck top.

An all-knowing grin is plastered on her face as she points to something off-camera.

Beside the photo of Isa, McCarry shared a further image of herself as a young child, wearing eerily similar old-fashioned clothing.

She wears a thick white knitted poncho, a matching white woolly bonnet and a thick pearl necklace and a red strapped handbag.

The young McCarry beams a toothy grin at the camera, akin to the cheeky smile sported by her adult-self dressed as Isa.

McCarry shared the photos to social media yesterday, writing: “I was destined to play Isa.”

The photo received over 1,400 likes and dozens of comments from amused fans who were quick to laud praise on McCarry’s depiction of the character.

One person wrote: “We were delighted that you did. I’m watching Still Game right now for the umpteenth time.”

Another said: “Oh, how cute is that little face?”

A third commented: “Me and the husband were late to the party and just finished Still Game last month, absolutely smashing. You get to know and love each character.

“I miss it now it’s over. You were brilliant as Isa, really made me laugh.”

A fourth added: “Great poncho. Those were the days.

Another wrote: “One of the greatest characters ever.”

Following the show being placed on an indefinite hiatus in 2007, McCarry reprised her role several times.

She appeared in 2014’s Still Game: Live in Glasgow before once again appearing on screens in the series upon its triumphant return in 2016 right through to its final episode, which aired in 2019.
