Salmond reacts to HBOS talks 211

Amid fears of job cuts at HBOS offices across Scotland, First Minister Alex Salmond said Westminster ministers should move quickly to end uncertainty among staff.

He claimed the Scottish economy was still thriving and said it was important to note that unemployment was down.

The two banks are in “advanced talks” over a merger that would create a retail banking group worth £30 billion.

Mr Salmond’s opposite number in Downing Street, Gordon Brown, was said to have personally intervened in a bid to save HBOS by speaking to Lloyds chairman Sir Victor Blank.
