Hissing Sid rescued from pub

Sid was rescued from a Hawick pub

A SNAKE called Sid has been rescued from the cellar of a Borders Pub.

The slippery customer was spotted by the landlord of Mansfield Bar in Hawick on Wednesday afternoon.

Experts believe the Everglades ratsnake could have been a pet which escaped from flats above the bar.

The runaway reptile is now being cared for at the SSPCA’s Edinburgh and Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Balerno.

Animal Rescue Officer Mairi Stewart said, “It’s very likely that Sid is a stray as snakes are good escape artists.

“There are flats above the pub so it would have been easy for Sid to come down the wall and into the cellar.

“As snakes can go for quite long periods of time without eating, it’s difficult to say how long Sid had been there.

“TheEvergladesratsnake is not a breed I’ve come across very often but they are kept as pets and Sid is in good condition which suggests someone may be missing their snake.

“Hopefully, someone will recognise Sid and come forward.”

Anyone with information about Sid is asked to contact the SSPCA on 03000 999 999.
