British woman shares differences between UK and USA – viewers compared her American home to The Truman Show

A HILARIOUS VIDEO shows a British woman sharing the culture shock she has experienced in The United States of America, with viewers comparing it to The Truman Show.

Melissa Herrera moved from her home in Welwyn Garden, Hertfordshire after falling in love and marrying her now husband who comes from South Carolina.

The pair then moved to Fort Mill, South Carolina just over two years ago and the differences in culture still continue to astound Melissa on a regular basis.

The 31-year-old took to social media earlier this week to document her thoughts whilst she was walking her dog.

Melissa begins her social commentary by panning the camera towards a typically American looking home.

The home has a porch area which Melissa notes is not very common in the United Kingdom.

The video then shows Melissa as she flicks a switch in her kitchen before she explains her reasoning for doing so.

She says: “The sink it has this thing where you can put the food down, you push the button and it grinds all the food, we don’t have that in England either.”

The ex-pat then comments on the rest of her kitchen amenities, commenting: “The mammoth sized fridge freezer, I know some people do have them in England but I didn’t.

“Just randomly having a water cooler in your house like I’m sorry what?”

The clip then continues in the bedroom of the property as Melissa explains the difficulties of having a large bed.

She explains: “The bed is so huge, look how big that bed is – that bed would not fit in any bedroom in England, I’m 5’4 and I struggle to get on it.”

The video creator continues: “Plug sockets in the bathroom, that’s a standard one everyone knows about I just find it very, very odd.

Melissa then takes the viewer outside whilst she walks her dog and has several complaints about the American way of life.

In the clip, a large garden sign has been pegged down to celebrate the birthday of a child with a unicorn on the sign, however Melissa claims this is the case for every birthday.

She says: “I’m sorry but this is so extra, every time it’s someone’s birthday even adults not just children, they have these big monstrosities outside their house.”

The video then showcases classic American past times such as basketball with Melissa explaining that the homes usually feature a basketball hoop in the driveway as well as the stars and stripes.

She says: “Every house has a basketball hoop, every house has an American flag, they are so patriotic it’s actually ridiculous.”

As her video comes to an end, Melissa is tickled by the water hydrant which sits on her street before she comments on the style of car and door decorations chosen by her neighbours.

She says: “This always chuckles me, I dunno why, it just reminds me of a minion but it’s a fire hydrant, water hydrant.

“Every single car is like an army tank just chilling there and everyone has wreaths on their doors like why it’s not Christmas, I don’t understand.

Melissa took to social media on Tuesday to share the video, writing: “I’m sorry but America is on a whole other planet, compared to the UK.”

The video received over 95,000 likes and more than 10,000 comments as many shared their surprise at the vast cultural differences.

One person wrote: “American houses just remind me of horror movies for some reason”.

Another said: “I’d die for an American house in the U.K.”

A third commented: “I’m American. This neighbourhood looks as foreign to me as it does to those watching in the UK.

“America is as different from state to state as Europe is.”

A fourth added: “Reminds me of the Truman show.”

A fifth said: “As someone who lives in the mountains of Colorado, this looks like prison to me. Hell no to suburbs.”

Speaking to Melissa today she said: “America is so different to the UK. I don’t think people understand just how different the two are.

“There is nothing remotely familiar or anything that reminds me of the UK here. The main culture shock for me has definitely been the food.

“They eat such weird stuff, especially in the south – like biscuits and gravy and grits. The food that we would have in the UK – it tastes so different here because they add loads of hormones into their meat.

“It doesn’t taste anything like the food in the UK.

“Another culture shock is no little corner shops where you live so you can’t just pop and buy milk, you have to drive at least 15 mins to get some.

“No one really walks much around here – everyone drives so you have to have a car. There is no public transport at all where I live.

“No buses, no trains. People don’t walk their kids to school like we do in the UK.

“They all get the school bus which goes down each child’s road – there’s so many [cultural shocks] I could go on forever.”

The Truman Show starred Jim Carrey as Truman Burbank in the 1998 film which documents the daily life of the titular character unaware he is being broadcast to millions of viewers.
