Bank holiday weekend leaves Peak District in chaos with seemingly endless traffic jam stretching across British beauty hotspot

THE bank holiday weekend left the Peak District in chaos as a seemingly endless traffic jam clogged up the roads of the beauty hotspot.

Lucy Sturgess stumbled upon the scenes during a cycle between the Derbyshire towns of Matlock and Castleton on Saturday.

Lucy’s journey was interrupted by a staggering herd of traffic as families in cars rushed to spend their Easter weekend at the national park.

Video shows Lucy filming from her point of view as she waits in the traffic, stuck amid a sea of vehicles that stretches as far as the eye can see along the rolling country lane.

The on-screen text reads: “Crazy Peak District traffic today. Cars everywhere.”

The line can be seen spanning for what seems like miles ahead as hundreds of families queue in anticipation of spending their long weekend in the British countryside.

Lucy turns to show the road that she has just joined from is also completely blocked with cars, sitting idly as far back as she can see.

Lucy took to social media on Saturday to share the shocking footage, writing: “Cars everywhere in the Peak District today.”

The clip received over 44,700 likes and more than 1,870 comments from Brits quick to share their opinions on the scenes.

One person wrote: “Peak District ruined forever”.

Another said: “Serious question – why has this become such a problem in the last few years?”

A third commented: “Welcome to the Peak District during bank holidays”.

A fourth added: “So glad I live in Scotland.”

A fifth wrote: “This is fantastic. People enjoying the countryside. Well done all those out there walking and appreciating our UK countryside.”

A final commenter wrote: “That’s why we stay at home and do gardening on bank holidays.

“Or, if it’s really nice, just sit in the back garden and watch the birds, and the occasional cheeky field mouse.”
