Morton manager Jim Duffy’s hopes of leading his side to Championship promotion success have been handed a boost after former Rangers midfielder Andy Murdoch signed a new contract that runs until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old’s previous deal was due to expire in mid-January after joining up with Ton in September following his release at Ibrox.

Murdoch, who had spent spells at Queen of the South and Cowdenbeath on loan, has made eight appearances in a Morton side that are currently sitting in third place in the league.

Duffy saw enough in that short time to decide that the playmaker merited an extension to his contract and Murdoch is delighted.

Murdoch said: “The manager took me aside and said I was doing well and that he would like me to stay and was offering me a new contract.

“This is what I was wanting to do, come in and do well and hopefully get a deal until the end of the season, and I’ve done that, so I’m happy.

“I’ve been enjoying it here and there was no hesitation about signing again.

“I’ve just got to keep my head down now, keep working hard and hopefully keep playing.”

Morton host second place Dundee United this weekend and Murdoch is hoping the Cappielow outfit can extend their unbeaten run.

He added: “We are six unbeaten in the league now. That’s a good record and hopefully we can keep that going. We just have to keep taking it game by game.

“I’m looking forward to the game, it will be a tough one. They’re in form at the moment too, but if just keep doing what we’ve been doing we’re in with a shout of getting a result.”
