Brora Rangers striker Steven Mackay has been able to have a laugh about his embarrassing penalty miss – even though footage of the effort has gone viral online.
The former Ross County player’s attempt from 12 yards was so bad that it cleared a 20 foot high fence behind the goal.
But the Brora captain, who scored a staggering 55 goals last season, was relieved that his woeful miss did not have any bearing on the result as Richard Brittian’s side racked up a 2-0 victory at Deveronvale.
And in response to team-mate Dale Gillepsie, who posted a picture on Twitter of two astronauts playing football on the moon, Mackay said: “Confirmation that my penalty has finally landed. I owe Deveronvale a new ball.”
Speaking to the Press and Journal, Mackay said: “It’s fair to say that the boys gave me a fair bit of stick after the match.
“It was awful. I knew it was bad but I didn’t realise how bad until I saw the footage back.
“I think it’ll be a while before I’ll be taking another penalty after that.
“I missed one last week too, the keeper saved that. I must be right at the back of the queue now.
“I’ve scored 144 goals in 140 appearances for Brora but I think I’ll forever be remembered for one of the worst penalties of all time.”
