A 15-year-old boy has been arrested by police in connection with the alleged rape of a young woman in a popular Scots seaside town.

Detectives detained and charged the suspect yesterday – a little more than a week after the sickening attack took place.

He has also been charged with an earlier serious sexual assault in the town on Sunday, July 19.

The youth is expected to appear at Haddington Sheriff Court today.

An appeal was launched by Lothian and Borders Police after the young woman reported being attacked at around 12.40am on Tuesday, July 21.

Despite being left horrifically distressed by the assault she was still able to piece together the moments leading up to the incident.

The attack was described by police as “very violent” and lasted for five to six minutes during which time the terrified victim sustained injuries.

It wasn’t until a passer-by came to her aid that the ordeal ended and the suspect fled.

At the time DI Stuart Hood, leading the investigations, praised the actions of the have a go hero.

He said: “Many people would have heard the screams and ignored them but this man went to her aid.

“If it weren’t for him it is likely it would have been a much more prolonged attack.”

“A major investigation has been launched to make sure that whoever carried out this attack is caught.”

The victim was said to be “devastated and hysterical” after her ordeal and was being cared for by her family having had medical treatment.
