Tian Tian snubs her Panda birthday cake

KEEPER Andrew Laing tries to tempt Tian Tian to take a piece of cake for her ninth birthday, but the lazy Panda opted for a quick lie-in instead.

Andrew Laing, Carnivore & Panda Keeper at Edinburgh Zoo, said “Tian Tian has always been an unpredictable lady panda.  Normally she loves her daily panda cake, so for her birthday we created a special version of the cake – in the shape of a human birthday cake – complete with carrots to look like candles.

“As with all animals, sometimes you really cannot predict how they will behave, particularly Sweetie.  It seems she decided she’d prefer a little nap and later in the day we expect she’ll go back to the cake and enjoy it when we least expect it!”
