Racist abuser at Glasgow supermarket sentenced

BBC Hotels, Glasgow 2014

A 59 year-old man was sentenced at Glasgow Sheriff Court this morning for assaulting and repeatedly subjecting a woman to racist abuse at a Denistoun supermarket.

Emiliano Sanchez, 59, was sentenced to 250 hours Community Payback Order and had a non-harassment order imposed to refraining him from approaching, contacting or communicating with the victim, or attempting to do so in anyway.

The court heard that on 25 November 2013 the woman was leaving the store after doing her shopping and was confronted by Sanchez who shouted verbal racist abuse at her.

He then forcibly removed her niqab by grabbing it and exposed the woman’s face before heading into the store.

The distraught victim composed herself and a short time later Sanchez, on leaving the store, observed the woman in the car park and again began abusing her in a similar manner and using similar phrases.

Speaking following sentencing, Procurator Fiscal Katie Stewart, said: “Emiliano Sanchez subjected his innocent victim to an unprovoked assault and tirade of abuse solely based on her appearance.

“Such behavior is totally unacceptable and every man, woman and child has the right to live free from violence, and without fear of humiliation, harassment or abuse, based on prejudice.

“We would encourage the public to report all such crimes to the police where, as with this case, they will be investigated carefully and prosecuted.”
