Shoppers left dumbfounded after video shows £5 Lurpak butter wrapped in netting and security tag

SHOPPERS have been left dumbfounded after a video showed a £5 tub of Lurpak butter now being locked behind security tags and netting.

The bizarre move was allegedly seen in an Aldi store in London on Saturday and appears to be the supermarket chain’s latest move amid the ongoing cost of living crisis.

An anonymous shopper shared the video to TikTok the same day, with on-screen text reading: “UK inflation going mad”.

The video shows a 600g tub of Lurpak sat on a shelf in the store, encased in a thin black string net, with a black security tag latched onto the tend.

The shopper picks the netted bag up by the security tag to inspect it as the butter – which is priced at an eye-watering £5.35 – lays beyond reach behind the flimsy defence.

Further tubs can be seen behind it on the shelf, all protected by the exact same measures.

The post has been viewed by over 7.5 million people and has received over 280,000 likes, with more than 3,900 comments from users left in shock at the seemingly over-the-top security measures.

One user wrote: “Why is Lurpak butter being held hostage?”

Another said: “They can afford the extra protection cost but cant reduce the price

A third added: “I mean £5 for a bit of salted and shaken milk is a bit nuts.”

Another replied: “Oh my God, it looks like it would actually be cheaper to just let some of them get stolen.”

A fifth joked: “I butter not steal that then.”

Since last year, a 500g tub of Lurpak butter has increased by approximately 37% in price in Aldi stores, from an initial £3.65 to now £5.00.

The current rate of inflation in the UK is at 10.4%, as latest statistics from February show.

This staggering rise comes from a variety of factors, including the obvious soaring energy prices thanks to the war in Ukraine limiting oil and gas from Russia.
