A SCOTS college has launched a series of virtual summer camps to help children learn computer coding, game development and programming skills
British Youth International College (BYITC) camps are hosted online and are accessible to young people aged 8 to 14 in any location.
The Glasgow-based college has launched the camps with the aim of teaching apps that introduce kids to coding – such as Scratch and Thunkable- and game creation platforms such as Roblox.
The 2023 BYITC first Summer Coding Camp took place yesterday and focused on games development, while the second runs on 31 July, 1 and 2 of August and will focus on Python – used for building websites and creating software.
Two free classes and a coding masterclass are still available on 27 July , whilst a fun competition made up of quizzes and games will be held on 3 August – the winners of which will win a smart watch.
Dr Rashmi Mantri, who has a PhD in Computer Science founded BYITC in 2015 to teach maths using the abacus – a counting tool thought to have been first used in 2,400 BC and known to be highly effective to make mathematical calculations involving huge numbers.
BYITC has since expanded into online courses in English, programming and cyber security and runs 10 franchises globally – including Dubai and Sri Lanka.
Dr Mantri said: “The idea is to introduce young people to the world of coding and games development, while also powering their imaginations with a combination of hands-on activities, interactive workshops and project-based learning.”
